NOTE FOR AOL USERS: People who were using AOL reported having problems where they would keep getting kicked back to enter the conference room. The problem was solved when we had them minimize their AOL browser and open up the Internet Explorer browser. They could enter the room with no difficulties using Internet Explorer.

STEP ONE: Disable Firewalls and Antivirus software

If you have any firewall or antivirus software loaded on your computer (Norton Antivirus/Internet Security, McAffee Personal Firewall) you will want to disable it. You can disable them by going down to the bottom right corner of your computer screen to the little row of icons (see Figure 1.a) you can expand the list of icons by clicking the little < arrrow.

*A suggested free replacement for Norton Anti-virus and McAffee is AVG 7.0 Free Version which you can download from STEP SEVEN.

(NOTE: If you are using Zone Alarm - See STEP THREE)

Figure 1.a

You can disable the programs by right clicking with your mouse on the icon of the program (see figure 1.b). Choose either "Disable" or "Exit" to disable the program.

<IF STEP TWO DOESN'T WORK GO TO STEP THREE.>

STEP THREE:

Replace your firewall

If you are using firewall software like Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Firewall, we have a free suggestive replacement.

  • A program which works very well with the conference rooms would be Sygate Personal Firewall. Follow these directions and you will be up and running with all the top-of-the-line software protection out there;

    1) - Go to http://smb.sygate.com/buy/download_buy.htm
    2) - Scroll to the Bottom of the page and click the version titled: "Sygate Personal Firewall" > Free Download
    3) - This should open a new download window and start the download automatically.
    4) - Follow the instructions as you go along.
    5) - When installed, Sygate will give you a warning that programs are trying to access the Internet, and as long as those programs are ones you recognize, then put a check mark in the box on the popup security window and click "yes". If you are not sure what the programs are it alerts you to, you can just click "no", and if it was something you were trying to access on the Net, and you can not reach the program, then you will need to redo your steps to open the program and instead of clicking "no", put the check mark in the box and click "yes" so it remembers that this is a program that is okay and that you want to be able to access the Net with.

<IF STEP THREE DOESN'T WORK GO TO STEP FOUR>

STEP FOUR:

Check Your Connections

You might be running an Internet Accelerator application. These applications configure your browser and network settings with proxy configurations that are very complex in a way the iCONCommunicator is sometimes unable to understand. Try disabling the software and try again to connect to the iCONCommunicator™ servers.

<IF STEP FOUR DOESN'T WORK GO TO STEP FIVE.>

STEP FIVE: Check for Ad Tracking and Spy-Ware loaded on your system

There is a very good chance you have all the Ad Tracking and Spy-Ware loaded on to your system that happens from simply surfing the Net. We use a wonderful tool to kill all these nasty little pests... A program called "SpyBot - Search & Destroy"

It will clean all these things off your system that prevent you from free movement online. Spyware can even stop you from going to the spyware competitor's Web sites.

Download SpyBot - Search & Destroy

Instructions for scanning with SpyBot;

1) - Close down all programs you do not need running.
2) - Open the SpyBot program
3) - On the left hand side tabs, you should be on the "Spybot: Search-S&D" tab
4) - Start the scan by Clicking on the link at the bottom "Check for problems"
5) - Let scan finish, then you will see a bunch of things with a check mark beside them, those are what you want to get ride of, and you will see some that have no check mark that are okay to have on your system...
DO NOT CHANGE ANY CHECK MARKS
6) - Click on "Fix selected problems"
7) - You then need to scan a 2nd time, and as long as no new threats come up, you are clean. If some more show up, then Fix selected problems again, and scan again. You need to keep doing this until there is nothing showing up in the scan results with a check mark beside it.
REMEMBER, the ones that show up with no check mark, forget about those, just leave them alone.
Run SpyBot once a week to keep your system clean.
8) - IMPORTANT! Repeat STEP TWO above

<IF STEP FIVE DOESN'T WORK GO TO STEP SIX.>

STEP SIX:

Disable Auto Detect Proxy

a) Go to the "Start" menu and then click on the option "Run"
b) Type in the dialog "c:\chatterbox\chatclient config"
c) Click on the "misc" tab
d) Unselect "Auto detect proxy"
e) Click on "OK"
f) Try to login again.

<IF STEP SIX DOESN'T WORK GO TO STEP SEVEN.>

STEP SEVEN:

Check ActiveX for Corruption

There is a good chance that the user's ActiveX Controls have been corrupted. This can be caused by the Norton Anti-virus killing portions of it, or, from a Computer Virus.

We recommend Removing Norton and installing the free AVG 7.0 Anti-virus software from:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
(There is no better anti-virus protection - PERIOD)

Once the AVG 6.0 is installed, run a "Complete Test"
Any viruses found, click on "Heal"
If there are any that will not heal, click "Move to Vault"
Repeat STEP TWO above.

STEP EIGHT:

Error messages:

'Alias in Use'
Someone else is in the iCON Center with the name you want to use, you will have to change your entry name.

'msg=&close=1'.
Simply change (or add) a character in your iCON Center name and enter again.

'Unable to Launch' or 'invalid page fault'
In the browser menu, go to Tools > Internet Options, then click on Delete Files in the dialog box. After deleting try opening the
ICONCommunicator™ again .

If you experience voice communication problems while in the iCONCommunicator Conference Center
Try reinstalling the sound card drivers or performing an upgrade located on the sound card manufacturer's web site.

IF STEP EIGHT DOESN'T WORK

There may be more serious problems than what we can handle, or even that we should try to handle or do ourselves. Re-installing Microsoft Windows may even be required.

Let us know what results you have please, and if there is something here that works to get you in to the rooms, tell us what it is that worked so we can pass it on to others.
